Daily Wig Care: How to ensure longevity for both synthetic & human hair wigs
Whether you own a synthetic or human hair wig, proper daily care is essential to ensure its longevity and maintain its natural beauty. At The Wig Boutique, we know that high-quality wigs can be a significant investment, and so we just wanted to outline some simple daily wig care tips that will help keep your wig looking fabulous for an extended period of time!
Check out some quick tips below, in order to preserve your wig and allow for as much wear without “tear” as possible:
Brushing and Detangling:
Use a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush designed for the specific type of wig hair.
Start from the tips and gently work your way up to the roots to prevent breakage.
For curly or wavy wigs, use your fingers to detangle, and avoid brushing when the hair is wet to prevent stretching.
Avoid Heat Exposure:
Synthetic wigs are particularly sensitive to heat, so avoid exposing them to high temperatures like ovens, stoves, or open flames.
Human hair wigs can handle heat, but excessive use of styling tools can lead to damage. If styling with heat, use a low-heat setting and thermal protection products.
Proper Storage:
When not in use, store your wig on a wig stand to maintain its shape.
Keep wigs away from direct sunlight to prevent color fading.
Wash Regularly, but Not Too Often:
There is a fine line between clean and over cleaning your wig. Human Hair wigs can be washed a bit more frequently (4-6 wears) than Synthetic wigs (6-8 wears)
Use a wig shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for synthetic or human hair wigs.
Gently lather the shampoo, avoiding rubbing or wringing the hair, and rinse thoroughly.
Drying Techniques:
Pat the wig dry with a towel to remove excess water.
Allow the wig to air dry on a wig stand to preserve its shape.
For human hair wigs, you can blow-dry on a low-heat setting, but avoid excessive heat.
Protect from Environmental Factors (ha, like we can do that here in Michigan):
If you can, avoid exposure to harsh weather conditions, such as extreme heat or cold.
If extreme weather is unavoidable, grab a silk or satin scarf when in super high or super low (aka dry air) humidity to prevent frizz and tangling.
Be Mindful of Styling Products:
Use styling products designed for wigs to avoid damage.
Limit the use of heavy styling products to prevent build-up.
Trimming and Maintenance:
Regularly trim the ends of the wig to prevent split ends.
Consider professional maintenance for human hair wigs to keep them in optimal condition.
By incorporating these daily wig care tips into your routine, you can significantly extend the life of your wig, whether it's synthetic or made from human hair!
